How to Prepare the Ground for Your Stock Tank Pool

One of the most important steps before installing your stock tank pool happens before the pool even arrives — preparing the ground properly. It may not be the most glamorous part of the process, but the extra effort you put into setting a solid foundation will make a huge difference in how safe, durable, and low-maintenance your pool is in the long run.

Step 1: Pick the Perfect Spot

Start by choosing a flat, well-drained area in your yard. Ideally, the spot should get a healthy balance of sun and shade — enough sunlight to keep the water warm, but also some shade during the hottest parts of the day to make lounging more comfortable. Avoid areas that collect standing water after rain, since that can weaken the base and cause the pool to shift.

Step 2: Clear and Clean the Area

Once you’ve picked your location, it’s time to clear it. Remove grass, rocks, sticks, or any debris that could press into the bottom of the tank. This step prevents future damage to the pool and makes sure the surface stays smooth. Many people find a sod cutter or a sturdy shovel works best for stripping away the top layer of grass.

Step 3: Level the Ground

After clearing, check the area with a level. Even a slight slope can cause problems down the road. An uneven pool puts stress on the metal walls and can lead to shifting, leaking, or even tipping. If the ground isn’t naturally flat, fill in low spots with dirt or sand and tamp it down tightly. In some cases, you may need to dig into higher areas to bring everything even. Always double-check from multiple angles to ensure accuracy.

Step 4: Add a Support Base

For extra strength and drainage, add a layer of compacted gravel or coarse sand once the ground is level. This helps keep the base dry and prevents water from pooling underneath. For added protection against weeds or grass regrowth, lay landscaping fabric underneath the gravel before spreading it out.

Step 5: Compact and Recheck

Before placing the pool, compact the gravel or sand layer well. A tamper or plate compactor works best here. Then, check again with your level in a few different directions. This might feel repetitive, but catching small uneven spots now is far easier than draining and moving a filled pool later.
